The Peoples Republic of California is broke. Guess who pays for this? Taxpayers in the other 49 states.
When I saw that this article had one comment, my guess was it must be Mr. Guse. Surprise! Another rant from the clueless curmudgeon who knows nothing about Caltrain and hates rail passenger service.
So the Guilroy trains will still have to run on a diesel… so why electrify the whole system???
The entire rail industry may benefit by lessons learned from Caltrain’s and Metrolink’s pioneering efforts with PTC. California is spending this money to avoid another Chatsworth. Technological advances and rules written in blood too often come only in the wake of such incidents and accidents. Hey, if PTC proves to be a waste of money, we can always regress to running trains by timetable order. There’s a system that really worked flawlessly ![]()
As to why The San Jose - Gilroy segment is not being electrified check the schedules on Caltrain.com. Only 6 trains out of 92 run that segment weekdays and none on weekends. Hardly worth it to electrify 20 miles(more or less) for that traffic!
