I looked at your links in the RDC thread. Nice models but that cutaway F unit looked is an eye catche! [4:-)][tup]
From the looks of it, you actually put a diesel engine inside. If you wouldn’t mind, PLEASE create a topic showing this locomotive up close and the detailing you performed on it. Explain how you modified this unit. Again, looks like a great job!
In my upcoming layout, a prominent feature will be a diesel locomotive servicing facility of the 1960s. I’d like to have several cab and hood locomotives with open or removed panels, showing the diesel powerplant inside.
I second Antonio’s request. Or please decide to do up an article for one of the mags. That gutted F unit would look great on any layout from the 50’s up to the present!

Through the magic of digital photography, here are a few shots I just took:

I made the model a looong time ago - probably more than 20 years ago. There was a two page photo spread in the July 1984 RMC, and it was on the upper part of the cover.
It started as a dummy Athearn F-7 (remember them?) that I sliced and diced to make it look sort of used. The side was made from Pastruct angles. The diesel was totally made up using pieces in my scrapbox. I thinned the roof pieces, including the removed hatches to make them appear like sheet metal. There’s a steam generator in the rear of the unit, the front door was made to be opened. The numberboards were loose, and the headlight was made to look opened. I added grab irons, horns, MU cables, etc.
Since I wanted to enter the model in an NMRA contest, it had to be powered. I added a PFM SPUD power truck to the front. Sure is cool to see this wreck of an engine moving down the track!
The model was inspired by a model I saw in RMC, but don’t recall where or when.
Thanks for posting the pics and the description - I thought I saw that model in an old issue of RMC. Fantastic modeling to be sure! I’ve added doing something similar to the long list of projects. I’m thinking that using the Walthers EMD 567 kit would make doing the interior somewhat easier.
You mean diesels aren’t supposed to look like that, when you are running a logging railway and not making a lot of money this is pretty well the cream of the crop looks like in my fleet of locomotives. the loco is a classic, well done!!! AND it runs.
This is excellent work and would fit right in a railroad engine servicing scene!
The SPUD truck is a cool stroke of genius. I’ve been planning on modeling cab and hood units that were about to be scrapped, OR some that look like they’re being overhauled. I had NEVER considered the idea that powering such a unit was feasible! Super idea!
I’ve downloaded this thread into a folder. Bob, I hope you continue to post more of your work. It’s amazing how this got started. Originated with the RDC thread! Stuff like this is what makes this Forum so much fun!
Glad to help! I’d copy the photos and save them if I were you. I don’t leave my images on Photobucket forever. Some day in the future I’ll probably delete them and you won’t be able to access them through a link to this thread.
WOW! doesn’t even describe it. That’s awesome Bob! I really like all the little touches, like the bundle of wires coming out of the electrical cabinet behind the cab in the third picture.
Say Bob. just what company produced this model, was it a kit or RTR. The manufacturer
certainly must have a great designing team to come up with an idea like this, what creative thinking h a h a h a
What I did was to download “The Entire Thread!” into one of my computer’s folders. Pictures, posts all went in!
To test if it was successful, I went off line and clicked to access the thread and photos. Got it all! So there’s not problem with you removing the items from your photobucket.
Again, your work is very inspiring! Also enjoyed your switcher!
I did a doubletake when I saw the model too, it looks like my item in RMC on my model was used to make his copy. Not a problem, as I made mine based upon someone else’s model in an even earlier RMC!
A couple of weeks ago I was just paging through some old MR’s and saw a pic of a GE44 tonner being worked on inside a engine house. The detail was fantastic including the engine inside the locomotive. Take a wild guess on the modeler!
Dave
P.S. Of course I can’t find that issue now, but when I do I’ll post the issue on here.
The pictures won’t show up for me. Not that I would know what I was lookin at.
