As an IC&E modeler, I try to ‘keep up’ on their unique loco’s & load carrying character. In my recent travels, I’ve noticed a few leased & helper locos from CITX (Mason City & Postiville, IA [Nov. 2010]) & the normal & expected older patched CP units, along with a mix of -2 DM&E motive power. I’ve modeled many of the unique IC&E loco’s including (but not limited to); CP(Dual Flag), FURX(-BNSF scheme, & Ath. non -2 Silver&Green), MRL/IMRL(Blue&Black Lion logo, & #8936 Gray Patch 45), etc. I have more in the works, & will have plenty blue Kato’s in paint, if I can strike a decal deal for lettering.
I am wondering if FURX (& the now adopted patched CITX) Silver & Green paint scheme was for a specific customer or something they did to be special?? If for a customer, I would be interested in who that was, as I am unfamiliar with that line.
I am attaching a shot to help out, yes, I apologize for the dang van. I also included the write-up I tagged with the original picture.
(Orig. description): A set of SD40-2’s; IC&E #6100 & CITX #3064, shuttling a ‘grain train’ east bound (Chi??) through Postiville, IA on Nov. 6, 2010. It was a very long & mostly grain train with a surprise rear ending SD40-2 & a Dash 9 from KCS pushing!!! I’m modeling the locomotives in this shot, but putting this shot up because of the CITX unit. CITX means CitiBank Leasing, I believe it is a patched over former FURX (First Union Bank RR Lease) unit. I’m wanting to find out if the paint scheme is one designed by FURX or another ‘line’ (customer) that convinced them to have them painted that way, similar to that of the ex BNSF units patched out with FURX lettering? This is a reference photo for that question. Although the freaking Van obs
IIRC, the FURX units(First Union Leasing) were painted in that green/silver paint scheme and sent out in lease service. They apparently sold and are now ‘patched’ as CITX lease units. These units have been all over. IIRC, many were ex-BN units, and many wound up running on BNSF in lease service at times. Get your pictures before they are gone. At least with CP, repainting does not seem to be a high priority at times and we still have old schemes around.
I did more research (looking) & see that there is an SD40M-2 …?.?.?..?
What is that? is it an SD45 with the 16 cyl powerplant swap? Or should I graft a 45’s rear rad’s onto a std SD40-2 ?? What about chassis length & walkway dims? I know that some RR’s come up with funny designations (NS 50’s as 40’s come to mind) & sometimes I am confused & think ‘I’m the idiot’…
I’ve always admired the lines of the 45’s & that is what is driving the question, I have two in my ICE roster My posting pic with the MRL lions head, & #8936 in last weeks WPF, & it is in the weathering shop now & making progress.
Guys, I’m still learning, & this makes it fun to me! IMHO…
The original unit was an ex-SP/SSW SD45, it may have gone though a program where the 20 cylinder block was cut down to 16 cylinders and reused. I think this was done in Boise or Livingston…
Wow, now I would like to do one in that badge, I like Canadian loco power & hopefully soon everyone will be able to see some of my better work in a future WPF.
Thanks for commenting on the original ‘scheme’ owner, that made my day!
Jim, thanks again for your great information & guidance!
So, would it work if I patched out & detailed up a Kato SD45, would that be OK? (I run Kato consists, for power & detail!, Kato lets me add all the details without any cutting, -except for inverting ditchlights.)
The CITX engine is a straight SD40. The electrical cabinet has been updated. Externally it is a SD40.
The SD40M-2 is most likely in a SD45 carbody, like this one.
Morrison-Knudsen (say Morrison-Nootsen) developed a method to cut down the 20 cylinder crankcase to a 16 cylinder one. There is more internal reinforcements in the bigger crankcase, and they figured out a way to retain most of these, so the cut-down 16 cylinder crankcase is stronger than one built as a 16 cylinder. Again, externally there are practically no changes, so a SD45 model can be used.
Chad I recommend going over to the diesel detailer site http://dieseldetailer.proboards.com and ask those guys what to graft where. They are great at doing all sorts of things and highly detailing the engines over there. Great site that I happen to stumble upon one day earlier this year and now I am hooked.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the help, I ordered a Kato SD45 & will be red-nosing & patching it soon. Also I have been siggessted to the DD site & do need to sign-on. I am a member of Chris’ at Railflyer Proboards & post a couple things there, as well.
Grain train out of the Corn Lines with mostly KCS hoppers would be a Bullet train to KC.Ethanol trains go to Chicago and I think a few grain trains were going to BRC last I knew, but mainly it was grain in liquid form going there.
Surprised a KCS motor made it past Nahant! usually they were cut off and left in the Roundhouse area till the Bullet train or suitable SPKC made it to Nahant and needed a power swap.
that old UP unit had a great air conditioner in it…too bad everytime we got it we didnt need it and the times we did need it it was a trailer or dead.
