Fuzzy 675

I got another 675 today, and the motor is covered with some type of fuzz. The gears were completely covered, and I can hardly see the axles. I was able to remove the big chunks, but the small stuff is a problem. Does anyone have any tips? Thanks for any info.

Sounds like she was run on carpet at one time. i use a dental pick and tweezers to just keep picking at it.

Same as with (50 year old) Christmas tree tinsel and dog/cat hair that got wrapped around axels and bound into bearings, and then firmly affixed with lubrication. More recently, my wife’s hair has made it in there. [:D] Sometimes I got items thoroughly cleaned out, only to have additional hidden debris pop up after running the serviced items. Goes with the territory, and patience with intricate tools do work. I posted some months back that I use locking surgical tweezers and hemostats for getting into tight places and grabbing the gunk.

Typically, I’ll remove whatever I can, and dunk it in solvent. Often, the fuzzy stuff is either carpet fiber or just regular dust that’s adhered to too much oil or grease.

In any case, what the solvent doesn’t get rid of, I manually remove. Typically, I will use either a small flathead screwdriver or a straight pin to clean out all the teeth.

One of these days, I may invest in an ultrasonic cleaner to use just for jobs like this. I have a feeling that, in combination with the right solvent, it could easily make really fast work of a messy, gummy motor.

Thanks for the replys. I am probably going to do a full restoration on this 675. I have to set this aside for awhile due to increased school work. Thanks again.
