Firefox 5.0 is now available for download. I’ve already found it quicker loading pages than Firefox 4.0. (Edit: Except when the annoying forum server repeatedly gives me the “The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading” message. [banghead][banghead][banghead]) And there are no temporary incompatibility issues, as with IE 9.
Wow! That sure was a fast transition from 4.0 to 5.0. I’m guessing…maybe 4 months, tops??? [:^)]
Have they EVER solved the problem of not being able to activate links ? I tried an earlier version last year that required a third party add-in module in order to put links into a message.
I can’t answer that one. However, I’ve never had any problems linking from this or other forums. For the MR forum I use the Insert/edit link icon in the tool bar above the text box.
I did the update to v5 day one and there were three of my adons that did not have v5 compatibilty. They were minor, so I don’'t recall them. Norton tool bar is up on my screen now so that one works. I don’t know about web-safe though. There were a couple of addons that didn’t work for me on the v4 update, but they were resolved within a week though.
Further FYI: Some tools that I find invaluable; McAfee Site Advisor and Google Toolbar are not yet compatible with Firefox 5. Of course, you don’t know that until you install ver. 5.
Only problem I’m having so far is one advertising video on Yahoo doesn’t run, but fouls up the whole operation usually requiring killing Firefox and restarting.
Did they solve the printer problem that fouled up printing from my Lexmark printer. It only lets the first page of the printer properties load. This meant that you could not access the “PROPERTIES” bar to go to the second page of PROPERTIES to switch between “Portrait” or 'Landscape", “Two -sided printing” or “Single page printing”, “Printing Quality”, “Black Print or colour” and a number of other items re. printing a page. Every time you clicked on the “PROPERTIES” bar, it locked up so it was necessary to print in High Quality colour even if you wanted to print something in low quality black only. Both colour and black cartridges run down very quickly that way.[banghead] I even deleted and re-loaded the Printer Drivers, but to no avail.
I tried Firefox 5 but went back to ver 4 in a flash. In version 5 Google Toolbar, Forecast Fox and several other add-ons I make use of don’t work. When they get these problems straightened out I’ll try it again. But why rush. Version 6 may be here in the next few months.
Firefox has blocked McAfee Siteadvisor completely until they release a Firefox 5 compatible version (expected delivery mid to end of July). If you install Mozilla’s Compatibility Reporter, you can enable the Google Toolbar. Firefox Compatibility Reporter. Don’t get to comfortable with Firefox 5, though, as they are slated to release versions 6,7,8 and 9 later this year.
There is another program, WOT or Web Of Trust, that you can install to let you know which websites are safe. This is a replacement I installed while McAfee works on their new version. The link for it is: Web of Trust
See the June 21, 2011, article, Firefox Rapid Release Process, for a nice overview of the new Firefox direction – Explains quite a bit.
My most mission-critical Firefox-friendly-extension is Sticky Password Pro which posts the new update within 24-hours of any supported browser’s (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Seamonkey, Thunderbird, Chrome, etc.) upgraded-version release. So, you just use another installed browser for 24-hours to access password/cookie sites like e-mail, or the MR Forums. Also note the free version.
I “upgraded” my Mac Mini in the layout room to “5” but have kept 4 on the old G5 and the laptop… Only real difference I notice is that in version 5 they have moved everything around into “new and more user friendly” places meaning that nothing is where it ought to be (according to what I was used to) so it just seems to be faster because I spend much more time try to find where they hid that little widget to click on… Have managed to close several tabs I was using trying to find where they hid the refresh button… The list could go on but…[:-^]
It is rather like the stores that every so often decide to increase their sales by hiding all the products I want to buy in new and different places… I keep assuring them it will NOT make me buy more things but probably less as I can’t find anything! My son, the Communications Expert keeps telling me I am so… “20th. Century”.
Yea, the old adage and truism “You can’t leave well enough alone” seems to be the software manufacturer’s mantra when it comes to updates.
I realize that change is and can be good. I also realize that “shaking things up” can improve the efficiency of a product - even if I don’t like it at first. There has to be a balance though. A major update every 6 weeks? That’s just absurd. You can’t be efficient if you’re making changes that quickly. I’m glad Honda doesn’t change the style of my Civic that often…
I had tried version 5 from IE8 and experienced all sorts of troubles w/ addons and Yahoo. Not sure if yahoo toolbar is compatible. Also did not import favorites from IE. Changed browser back. Will try again when have more time to find issues.
