FYI

Port workers secure military tanks on a cargo train at the coastal town of , about 500km (311 miles) from . A Ukrainian ship laden with the tanks and freed by Somali pirates after a five-month hijack offloaded its military cargo with debate still ranging over ownership of the sensitive military cargo.

Are these american tanks?

I believe they are Russian “surplus”.

I believe they are T-80 tanks or a variant thereof. This was the first class of (former) Soviet tank to use a Gas-Turbine Engine.

They are ex-Soviet T-72’s (Diesel Powered) purchased second hand from the Ukraine by an unidentified customer (Jane’s defense weekly states it may have been Sudan). Kenya is buying them now, prob. at a deep discount.
