Just saw a commercial in GE’s “green” [environmentally friendly products] series of commercials. This one featured a recreation of the Golden Spike ceremony at Promontory Point. a real good side view of a 4-4-0 and a pretty cleverly done pitch for clean, smoke free locomotives, the final shot is a head on, rt. side profile of Evo 2006, in GE comapny paint job.
I don’t know if this is a new commercial, but it’s the first time I have seen it, and thought it was pretty cleverly done.

I saw that the other day too, I thought that was awesome, GE promoting their Locomotives instead of lightbulbs!!
They also have an ad where they promote their jet engines. I’ve seen both of them - the one with the locomotive was on twice yesterday during the Suns-Lakers game.
Seen this one a few times now, first time was during Sunday Morning on CBS, actually made me laugh! I have to say it was very cleverly done and really emphisised just how dirty coal burners could be, I still remember as a kid getting cinders and soot in my eyes and face from the Durango train. My wife saw it and she too thought it was pretty clever…and she is not what you would call a train person.
The jet engine/Wright Brothers Flyer was a little over the top but pretty well done also.

I did not ever think that I could ever be in complete agreement with you, buit this time…I agree across the board, and for the same reasons[8D]. If there were a railfan award for a rail oriented commercial, this GE commercial would probably be right in the top ones.[:D]

I think the Aflac commercial is a good one ! LOL danny
I was not fond of the Golden Spike take off. That one was definately over the top.
However, the one with the dancing elephant is cute.
GE ran this series of commercials about 6 moths ago near the end of 2005.
I have seen both the dancing elephant and the golden spike one in the last week. So they are making the rounds again.
The commercial was shot in Carson City at the Nevada State RR Museum with a row of trees behind the engines edited out. (The powers of digital imaging.) The engine representing the Jupiter is the V&T wood-burner – but the engine representing the 119 is a real stretch – a Baldwin oil burner.

Promontory Summit. Promontory Point in out in the Great Salt Lake.
Plus the other note to make, both of those locomotives there in 1869 were wood burners.
Look again at those pic, UP #111 is a coal burner, that straight stack is a dead giveaway, makes sense for a railroad from the wood starved side of the rockies.

CP’s Jupiter was a wood-burner and UP’s 119 was a coal burner. I am learning to fire both replicas. We will burn about 90 cord of wood and about 50 ton of coal in the 6 month operating season. And no way to we generate that much smoke.
