What year did the Great Northern start using the white safety slogans on their cabeese? I am guessing the late 40s but can’t find any info. about it. Also what determined which slogan was used on a caboose or was it just random?
Not sure of the exact year but I’d guess early 1950’s??
The last number of the caboose no. determined which of the 10 safety messages were used. All cabooses whose no. ended in “8” got a “WHAT’S YOUR SAFETY SCORE TODAY?” slogans for example.
BTW in the fifties, GN cabooses often had yellow lettering, not white. David Hickcox’ “GN Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment” shows several recently repainted GN cabooses at Kelly Lake, MN in 1956; all are red with yellow lettering and all have slogans.
