Hi all
I have ordered on impulse some of Atlas’s HO DSEU garbage con flats and matching 20’ high cube garbage containers.
Pass the air freshener thanks [+o(].
Well this is OK as it goes but something I would normally not have considered as freight traffic…
Which is the best loco for the train ?? which RR hauls them?? how do they run ??what do the facilities each end of the run look like and any other answers to questions I don’t know I should be asking?? would be very helpful.
regards John
Several recent issues of Railroad Model Craftsman magazine have articles on modeling garbage trains and facilites.
John: I see dedicated “trash trains” on Norfolk Southern’s main line here in Pittsburgh all the time. The power can be varied, but has included SD70, SD70M, Dash-8 and Dash-9’s. I’m fairly certain they are going to a landfill in Ohio, but I’m not sure where they originate. If I had to guess, it would be New Jersey or New York. I will tell you that if they get a stop signal on a hot summer day where I usually railfan, you best hope for a good stiff breeze. The empties going back East bound aren’t as bad, but will still get your attention.

How big do you want to go?
NYC Sanitation Transfer Station, Staten Island
Bridgewater Resources Transfer Station, Bridgewater NJ
There are quite a few such facilities strew about the NY Tri-state area, and probably many other urban areas too.
Also consider there is a difference between MSW (Municipal Solid Waste - household garbage) and C&D (Construction and Demolition) flows - C&D transfer stations are generally generate less complaints because they don’t have odd odors, although they can be dustier. MSW, besides odors, also needs to control vectors (pests - insects; also rats etc).
I’m tempted to say MSW is generally going in containers nowadays, C&D may still be mainly bulk in Gondolas/Hoppers
Shameless self promotion here but…
A few years ago I was taking a graduate class on environmental law and policy. My class project was a study of some of the legal issues involved in waste to rails transfer. Anyone interested can drop me a quick e-mail and I will send a copy.

Running this trash train is a great excuse for a Penn Central Heritage Unit…

The New York Atlantic Railway hauls alot of trash off of Long Island. They have a facility in Pinelawn NY. I was there a few months ago watching the operations.
I think it is a good addition to a model railroad. I would like to have a trash train as through traffic on my layout maybe…
John: I should have mentioned in my earlier post that most of the cars I see have reporting marks of “GIMX” and the containers are “LWT”. Tom
Stinky, with the occasional putrid dribble and you’ve nailed it.[*-)][:S][%-)]
CSX runs several trash trains between NYC and points south. For example, CSX Q405/Q406 usually hauls trash in orange containers on flatcars (DSEX reporting marks) on manifest trains. CSX Q702/Q703 is a dedicated trash train that hauls trash in gray containers on flatcars. Earl…
if you are referring to the Coastal Distribution facility off New Highway in Farmingdale, that’s C&D only (not MSW).
MSW, you go to the Bushwick branch in Brooklyn, among other places.
