I’m surprized at the negative reaction i got after my garden rr appeared in the Aug. issue of Modelrailroader !!! Check out their web site +++++
They’re just afraid to come out of their basements[;)]
Ditto Vic! I could not believe it either! Whats the big deal?
There is a problem here.
Mentall…oops…Model Railroader has always been, up until recently, the bastion of scale fidelity.
Started with the Milwaukee Mafia long before most of us were born.
They have avoided non-scale items, insisted on RP-25 contours, are happiest with brass (at least in the past), and full, proper detailing on the locomotives and rolling stock.
They have been trying of late to become everything to everybody, and, in my opine, failing miserably.
They have taken it upon themselves to do Garden Railway-type features (the Claremont and whatever was a prime example), and the mistakes are astounding.
I had a conversation with the guy in charge, and said next time walk across the hall to Horovit’s office and ask him who he would recommend to write such a thing.
The feedback you get is more than likely going to be typical, as those who buy and read the mag are scale adherence aficionadoes.
No matter what we do, even with full to-scale brass in the proper scale-to-gauge, the 1:1 scenery doesn’t “work” for them.
Doing 1100 curves, hook-and-loops, 1:29, and 332 rail is not going to endear such to them.
Not that you did that, just that they look upon this as “toys”.
I do 215 and 250 rail, narrow-gauge ties, properly gauged switches, and full-blown operations, yet I am not in the mag.
Feel fortunate you got published.
The comments (I read them all) are mixed.
Some like it, some don’t want it in MR.
The comments aren’t really bad. What’s bad is MR reviewing Large-Scale items and getting it wrong, stating scales it is not, and GR actually measured it and compared, but hey, it’s just a hobby, right?
Can you post the link to what your talking about??
In our opinion Model Railroader could put more emphasis on the Model and certainly cover the full spectrum of scales.
Leave the no-specific scale items to GR and CTT, they cover that to a large extent already.
This month, GRR featured an indoor layout. One time, MR featured a 3-rail museum layout (about a year ago). I agree with the poster that the negative comments are uncalled for, as an outdoor layout is just as “scale” or more so than a non-dynamic indoor layout.
I did note some positive responses, and I personally feel that a few articles out of the ordinary in each of the Kalmbach magazines, is OK.
BTW, I got MR until a few months ago, but I’ve been so busy with work and hobby that I cut down all magazines to just Trains and GRR
I personally like seeing articals about ride on trains, but thats another mag also.
Yes me too Marty!
I read the article referred to in this post and the comments of the other post. I’m not complaining about MR publishing garden railroading stuff, and I even enjoy some of the prototypical info they publish. Could it be that guys like me who are in multiple gauges are more accepting of the “universe?”
My advice to the author is to not take the negative comments badly, they’re not questioning you and your stuff, but MR.
I like the variety in both GR and MR, I can’t remember seeing a bad layout, several that don’t interest me but that’s just a matter of taste. It was seeing an article like yours that started me off in G.
Do what makes you happy, someone at MR liked it enough to put in the mag so that’s a compliment.
The only downside is all this variety means I have N, 009, HOm, HO, OO, O, On30, G1 and G models, is this too much inspiration?Still I’m having fun!
Paul
Well , you learn NOT to take stuff tooo personal on these forums. As long as the guy who signed the check is happy, thats the main thing.
I believe only one person had any “real” “backed up” negative responses to that article, the rest were not worth reading, the rest were just spitefull. I just replied to him on the MR site. That guy was very vocal, but had no leg to stand on, I found it fun to tear his post apart. Marty I hope you don’t mind me using you as a challange to him (please take that as a complement as I do not believe in any way shape or form he could match you), as there is MAYBE a dozen modelers total that can get that kind of detail & photo skill to make it look real, no mater the scale, even if he had a highly detailed layout with photo knowedge,.
Eric
I saw that, no problem.
Its all back to money, what am I getting for my,MY money???
I stopped getting MR way back simple because i get to many magizines and I find that if I try to be a modeler, I need to study the real thing, not what others do with it. Tho it helps.
Just like the photo contest from GRYs , I’m my own worst creditc. But I’m into that.
BTW,The more you go public , the more your in a fish boil.
Marc H. told me that way back. He takes alot of heat.
If I get really down and dirty I can always say,“My RRs bigger than your RR!!!”

You can never have too much inspiration!
(You can, however, have too little space.)
Ever thought of using models in adjoining scales to attempt to force perspective? Something like Z scale in the back of a N scale layout, N behind HO, etc.
LOL, humor always gives a change of perspective… I am still laughing 5 minutes later…
I like the idea that MR is featuring alternative scales and modeling techniques besides the usual HO material in their magazine. It was similar articles in the past that got me to try Large Scale modeling. Although I model Large Scale indoors, try to be as close to scale as possible, and like to super-detail locos, rolling stock, and structures, many articles - whether about garden railroads, Lionel, or extremely-detailed prototypical-to-the-micrometer equipment - are interesting and contain useful information that helps me improve and increase my enjoyment of the hobby. If MR continues with their current trend of featuring alternative modeling techniques such as unusual gauges, minotity scales, and Large Scale layouts - both indoors and garden railroads - I will definitely renew my subscription.
Marty,
I noticed in your profile it states Nebraska City, NE. Are you by any chance from York, NE ?
I’m from C.B. Iowa.
The wife is from McCook NE
We moved here because its just far enough from our outlaws (to stay friends) but close enough to go visit when we want.
