Last night MythBusters (Episode 66 on the Discovery channel) had a segment about “find out just how dangerous it is to stand too close to the edge of a train platform.” Where they used “G” scale model trains to determine if it is possible to get sucked off a train platform as one goes by. I will not give the results away or how they used the trains, packaged in the familiar yellow boxes and red white and blue box, because the episode should be on several more times before next Wednesday ().
I saw the promo for that the other day and wondered what scale they used (since you only saw a second or two of it). For anyone who hasn’t seen it, this show is really interesting.
The hobby store they went to is amazing or i should say was. its out of biz now reeeallyy sad, i remember seeing that loco set they used beauty it is indeed but its all gone now.
For the folks like me that don’t have the Discovery channel, please elaborate on the trains used, steam or diesel, etc. and brand, and the project. I have stood very close to the tracks when 4 Dash-9s roar by with a huge container load in tow. have not got sucked under yet. I guess they weren’t going fast enuff?
They used a Alco FA and some passenger cars, and w/ small freight cars. All aristo craft. Put in in a mini wind tunnel w/ added smoke to see the air resistancee and the “suction” behind it.
