Gargraves O32 vs Lionel O31

I have never built a layout but really like the Wabash “track plan of the month” in the Nov 2012 issue. I will be buying track and switches for whatever I build as I do not have enough to complete a layout like. I like the looks of GG and RCS. On this particular track plan, can Gargraves O32 be substituted for the Lionel O31 and still fit? Also, can Ross O31 switches be cut to fit where an 022 (O31) Lionel switch is shown on the track plan?

You may need to allow for a little more room when using Gargraves track, their 032 curves are really 32 & a quarter inches in diameter. I would not cut down a Ross Custom switch, it may give you problems like falling apart at the crossties because it is custom made hand-laid track.

both O27 and O31 track take their measurements from outside tie to outside tie; that is, an O31 circle of track should fit in a 31" circle with no overhanging pieces (but you’d better bring out the leather gloves to get the joints that tight).

Thanks for the info. It looks like I have to do some serious planning before I start anthing. Do you use any of the planning software out there?

Howdy,

I have an older version of RR Track which is still very nice. The only problem with it is the cost but it is neat. It has something like 11 different O gauge track types to select from. If you are only going to use it once the cost is something though. Atlas and maybe some others offer a free program but I imagine they are locked in to their particular track type. Makes sense. I have played with the software a few times and one time used it to develop a plan for something an individual on CTT was asking for. The reason I got it to begin with was to take a layout plan using standard Lionel O and adapt it to Gargraves with Ross turnouts. It was a big help then…
