Gateman question

The thread on gateman restoration prompts this question from me. Years ago the gateman I remember had a hole in the plateform with a red? bulb underneath that lit up when the gateman popped out and his arm would swing with the clear red lantern. The light shinning up through this hole onto that lantern made the lantern look like it was lit up. However on some gateman I’ve seen this hole is not there. Is the lantern lit on the ones without that light in the base? Ken

The 45/O45/45N Gateman with a metal shack had a lightbulb that lit up the man’s lantern. It was produced, with many variations, from 1935 - 1942 and from 1945 - 1949. Prewar versions had a red insert in the lantern hole with a clear lightbulb; postwar versions had no insert and a red light bulb.

The 145 Gateman with a plastic shack did not have a lantern light, but the shack did light up. It was produced from 1950 - 1960. It was re-released and is still being made.
