G'Day Everyone

Long time no see. Photographics, camping, work and such have kept me kind of busy lately, so once again, I apologize for my absence.

Anyways, had a quick question for you all. Are there any good railfanning sites up around Yellowstone NP? I’ll be headed up there from May 17th - May 23rd. I don’t know how much free time I’ll have (I’m actually headed there mainly to take pictures of the baby animals (May is the best month for this). I would like to get out and get some train shots if they’re around though.

I’ll be staying in West Yellowstone, but do have excursions planned to other points around the park and the Tetons. If I remember right, most railroads lie north of the park, though.

BTW, as an aside, I sold my Pentax Super Takumar 500mm f4.5. It was simply too hard to focus without focus confirmation on the Canon body with its dim 1.6x finder. So I picked up a Tamron SP 200-500mm f5-6.3 Di LD to fill in until I can afford some of the big Canon glass. I did a review over at DPReview. Not sure if any of you would be interested in a long telephoto, but if you are, the link is here:

Hope you’re all doing well!

There nearest trains to West Yellowstone are generally in Idaho Falls - but the East Idaho RR runs a train out the Yellowstone branch from IF to Ashton most every weekday. This time of the year you may see wood chip gons, covered hoppers with grain and fertilizer, and refrigerated potato cars.

Thanks for the info DD.

Great photo in your Q and R sites Thank you

Well if you happen to Stop through Rock Springs on your way through let me know, I will be happy to show you the Model RR club layout, and watch some trains with you! You picked a Perfect time to go to the park. The last road opens into the park on friday(the 12th) so it will be pretty much untouched for the next couple weeks. 1 Warning though. Bus + Buffalo = Bad! Last monday, while on a Geology field trip we barley missed a buffalo that ran across the road in Teton park just near Kelly. I hope you have a great time enjoying that part of the state!
