In what era were these locos first used?
Are any available (RTR) in HO with DCC AND sound?

Google them. Plenty of info online and you can save the links.
Bachmann has both in HO scale, DCC onboard, no sound.
I have put a LokSound Micro and 16mm x 35mm speaker in two 44 tonners.
A LokSound Micro with 16mm x 35mm in a 70 ton.
Search the DCC forum for my photos.

I love 44-tonners! I wish the NYC would have had some. [:(]
Bruce, here’s a handy website on early diesels that’s worth bookmarking: The Yard Limit

Bruce,
My original edition Diesel Spotter’s Guide says 1940 for the 44-tonner, 1945 for the 70-tonner.
AFAIK, nothing with sound for either one. That would be a neat trick with the 44-tonner. The 70-tonner has the space for a standard install with some work and a small speaker.
Bachmann offers both at very reasonable prices with DCC. The decoder is pretty worthless, but the locos are good stuff, if a little on the noisy side.
The 44-tonners were first built in 1940.
The 70-tonners were first built in 1946.
Litchfield Station programmed the LokSounds for me with the recommended sounds and are pretty good. The decoder for the 44 ton sounds like two prime movers starting, one right after the other.
Don’t forget, we are boys playing with toys. Don’t take this too seriously. Prototype sounds reduced to HO scale.

Loksound has the correct sounds for a GE 44 tonner, dual CAT diesels.

The 70 ton used the Cooper-Bessemer FWL-6T prime mover according to one source.
Litchfield Station suggested the LokSound Baldwin 6-VO sound. Works for me. I have never heard a real one.
No idea what is available right now for sounds. I did mine a few years ago.

Its not a bad install at all, you would need to remove the PC board and toss it to gain room, but no big deal. I used two speakers, one under each hood.
Still looks like a neat trick to me.
Very nice for simulating two prime movers. This never occurred to me at the time. I had followed a fellow’s suggestion who is in South Africa in another forum.

One thing to lookout for on teh Bachmann models is the early production ones had 2 motors one in each truck. These did not run as well as the newer ones that have a single motor in teh frame. The 2-motor ones often show up at train shows and on E-Bay
George,
Good point. Most store stock seems to have flushed the new improved drives through the system, but you do want the updated versions for better performance and relaibility.
