GE 50 Ton

Does anyone know some dimensions of a 3 foot gauge GE 50 tonner or have some drawings? If I have some dimensions I can make a drawing. I want to build a model of East Broad Top M-7. I don’t live too far away and they said I can come measure it if I want but I don’t want to run the whole way there if someone knows.

You might check MR to see if it was ever done as a drawing.

I had thought that only Southern Pacific #1, a 51-ton locomotive GE made in 1954, was the only 36" diesel-electric locomotive ordered by a common carrier railroad in the continental U.S. Is 55 (former 50) ton M-7 of the East Broad Top a standard gauge locomotive, or has it been modified to run on narrow gauge, or was it originally purchased by a private railroad?

I don’t know if this will be of any help to you, but I just found a sketch of SP#1. The only dimensions shown are the height of the end-of-body cab of 12’, and overall coupler-to-coupler length of 32’-4.75" and 3/8", truck centers 7’-8.75" from the couplers and 17’ apart, with wheel axles 7’ apart at each truck. For an unknown reason, the 102,000-pound locomotive is identified as a 45-ton model on page 15 of Joe Strapac’s SP Diesel Locomotive Compendium. It did have a 450 h.p. engine. I’ve got to ask Joe for an explanation.

It was origionally an Algoma Steel locomotive in Canada and was purchased along with 3 clones and an extra set of trucks by Kovalchik Salvage in 1992. The 3 clones but not the extra trucks were sold to the Durango and Silverton a few years ago.
