No, the re-powering has been in the works for some time. The new engine is a 16 cylinder version of the proven GEVO 12 cylinder. The 16 cylinder is rated at 6,250 HP. Which, by the way, is not its maximum output. The 12 cylinder version can run at 5,500 HP with no reliability problems.
It is like this i run what is in the consist, that is why i am out there 12-14 hrs at a time because these junk ge engines quit . I have never been stranded with a emd unit even the old drafty worn out sd-40s. See what you need to learn is before you try and get under a old timers skin better find out what makes them mad… Im in it for the money i rather have the best engines by EMD but i haft to run inferior engines made by GE. just this year alone i have had 80% of the ge engines fail and 0 emd fail.
Neat. I clicked on the forum this morning to see if anyone knew about the re-engined CSX AC6000’s and found this thread. I did talk to a CSX electrician who worked on one of these, and he told me that all the electronics were upgraded to same as GEVO’s, he wasn’t quite sure about the power plant, though. At the time I spoke to him, a few months back, he said they had done about four or five of the AC6000’s and had them in service.
