What is the actual difference between tier 3 and tier 4. What do they actually measure on a diesel engine as apposed to a car engine which everyone understands. How did the EPA or who ever in control of the standards set the standards for which the locomotive must meet. It seems that maybe the starnders are set too high and no USA manufacturer can meet these standards at this time. If both GE and EMD can not meet the tier 4, can a manufacturer outside the USA meet tier 4 ? I haven’t seen any outside (USA) locomotives being tested on the tracks over here lately.
It seems to me that GE is " hyping up " their ability to produce
Tier 4 engines. Meanwhile, EMD is left holding the bag because
they are not in the position to do so either. Even worse, they are
unable to manufacture any locomotives for use in the USA in
2015 because of this foolish EPA regulation.
I have it from a reliable source that UP is going to order
several SD70Ace locomotives from EMD yet this year with Tier 3
credits. Good for them! UP has always posted in their annual
report to stockholders that they must have the ability to purchase
new locomotives from more than just a single source.
