The Dash 8 catches on fire first!

miniwyo,
These locomotives are generally similar. The 6 axle Dash 8s have the older, conventional “floating bolster” trucks that look like the trucks under older GE units, and they have large air intakes, longer than those on a Dash 9. The Dash 9 has the new Hi-Ad trucks with visible external springs each side of the axle boxes, and the radiators are deeper than those on a Dash 8. The AC 4400 is generally like the Dash 9 but has a very large box containing the AC converters on the left hand side behind the cab, and above this has one extra dynamic brake fan and grille.
Looking for these points, particularly the trucks and in the case of the AC4400 the large converter box, should make telling the types apart fairly easy (except on the CSX units, many of which have different steering -type trucks. The other features work for them too).
Any Widenose GEs with four axles are Dash 8s!

…and when you search for the real confusion:
TAKE A LOOK AT THE CSX C44-8 !!!
CSX call them C44-9.
This unique, only built for CSX, serie looks like a Dash9 with the wrong trucks.
ALL GE’S “SUCK”!
