GE + EMD????

I have heard several rumors that General Electric has bought out EMD locomotive division. I have heard this from several sources, though have not seen or heard of any conformation. I was woundering if any one else has heard this? I wonder if we are going to only hafe one locomotive manufacturing company???

Legally, there is no way to keep a major deal like that secret. If it ever happens you’ll know about it for sure. There would have to be federal approval as well.

Dear Marvin,

I have not heard anything about this. This is all news to me. But I don’t think that EMD would sell out to its major competitor. Plus I think that some people would agree with me on this. We don’t want more GE’s on the road. EMD’s are the best there is and the best there ever will be. EMD had to much of a battle trying to stay alive in the 80’s. Then they came up with the new stuff, diong well, but its going to come to that time again when things are going to slow down. I just don’t think that EMD will sell out to GE.

Interesting indeed. I have read that EMD has been on and off the market for years but I would think that the Justice department wouldn’t allow the only competition to merge. However in today’s rather **** corporate climate you never know.

I don’t think the railroads or the Feds would allow that to happen.I suspect this got started by a GE fan wishful thinking. Now,if you heard this while railfanning and talking with other railfans,I would just forget it as another rumor in a long line of railfan rumors,of which I have heard more then my fair share over the years.
A old saying comes to mind. When railfanning don’t forget to bring the salt with you as you will surely need it.

Read the News Wire.GM woants a buyer. Is GE for sale

The name EMD might go, the facility never. A little info to all you Yanks out there, the ex-
tremely protectionist Quebec and Canadian govs
will crawl up each others butts to buy this
company for Bombardier. The same way they have
been doing this with public money for years,
[both railway and aerospace]. You’re welcome.

The rumors that I have heard are from people in the RR trades, and from railroaders, not railfans. I know that there isa a lot of wishful thinking in the railfan community. I prefer the GE’s to the EMD’s, though there are a lot of old ones of them around.

Another popular railroad discussion board has a long thread going about this. The common wisdom, born out by several recent news articles,is that GM is definitely looking to get out of the locomotive business, and is actively seeking a buyer for EMD/GMLG. GE is considered a strong possibility, but hardly the only one.

Sounds like EMD might become the “Oldsmobile” of locomotive brands!!Ron H.
