If you go to CNN’s website (www.cnn.com) you may catch the ad for a General Electric locomotive. It’s being billed as more “environmentally friendly” than other engines. It’s Monday morning, May 9th, in case you’re wondering when the ad was actually running.
I’m sure this is more of a Corporate Image thing than an attempt to sell locomotives to people checking the news on CNN, but it’s interesting nonetheless. If you follow the links, you’ll end up on a GE page with some audio.
It is pulling 4-car ICE train!
Appearance wise the new GE “muscle” hasn’t changed much.
I sure do wish GE would do something with those noses!
I think that was a one time ad run targeting those in power (The ones who buy and sell locomotives for the railroads they work for)
Possibly among issues such as a nearby locomotive shop that could use the work building new units.
Hey Guys!
I saw the GE commercial!
It started out with the “Golden Spike” ceremony. The narrator winds up saying to the effect “Too bad they didn’t have cleaner locomotives”.
Then the black and white scene changes to color but the people are still dressed in their 1800’s Western U.S style clothing. As the color fades in, you see everyone gazing at GE’s new U-Boat—uh—oops![:P] …Sorry, I mean the new GE six axle giant!
Short commercial, but pretty cool! [:D][8D]
A GEVO banner was running on ESPN’s web site last night, too. Sounds to me like a little effort at PR around the new locomotive. The anniversary of the Golden Spike is today, too. Whether anybody on the ESPN site would know any of that, well, I’m skeptical.
This is all part of a GE announcement yesterday (5/09/05) about a big move into “environmentally friendly” businesses. They’re now in wind and solar energy, water treatment, and efficient power generation, transmission, and use. The loco was also displayed on a full two page ad in the business section of the New York Times.
I saw the commercial while watching “Medium.” (NBC)
Tom
I was at a friend’s house this evening and while I was there, an ad appeared for Norfolk Southern RR. As one who does not normally watch much TV, I was surprised to see it. I’m sure the ad was on one of the cable channels, but it was funny to see here, way out west in SoCal.
