I saw something just odd the other day while at Northtown. It looked like a normal SD40-2 but as it went by I looked back, it had a GE “builders plate” on the left front! No, I’m not kidding! Has anybody seen this before?
Maybe added by a railfan with a wierd sense of humor?
[:-^]Sounds impossible, did you get a picture?

I know GE has been rebuilding some EMD locomotives, it seems like there was a topic (thread) in here about that recently. Maybe this locomotive was one of those.
That thread was about an Elgin, Joliet and Eastern SD38-2 with a GE builders plate.
I saw an SD60M with a GE builders plate.[:D]
Jordan6, you went to NorthTown huh? Too bad i wasnt there, i railfan over there a lot, and ive seen that GE Builders plate too. Stop by pigs eye or new brighton?
Alec
EJ&E engines were rebuilt and or owned by GE. The builders plate is applyed to the rebuilds and almost all of the locomotives in GEs fleet. In addition if you plan to move a locomotive across the US Canada border you must have the builders plates on the locomotive.
IC&E has 55 SD40-2s and all most if not all of them have a GE builders plate. They are ex-UP SD40-2s and were rebuilt by GECX.
Everything at 1 time or another has shown up at Northown.
Hi Alec, maybe when I’m sitting at University for 6 hours I’ll see ya! I’ve never had work at CP’s Pigs Eye but another conductor said they made a setout there. Don’t know where New Brighton is. We do have trains that do work at Daytons Bluff, Midway, and Union yard.
Nope, no picture. But I swear that’s what I saw!!!
Hi guys, I was the one who saw the EJ&E unit with the GE builder plate…nice to know I am not crazy and really did see it. The explanation above makes sense, but it was a first for me and sounds like for many of us.
So who do you work for? BNSF, or what? Ya , you might see me , i am usually on the 35th Ave bridge, although i only bike there with my friend, so if you see anyone taking pics on that bridge, its probably my friend and me.
Alec
Is it just me or is GE really being a sore loser? Like GE having an EMD Engine in there Commercials and now they’re rebuilding EMD Locos. Explain this to me if I’m wrong.
Dustin
EMD engines in GE commercials? When?
Alec
The only GE commercial I saw aired not too long ago and that engine was an ES44DC.
GE is becoming a power in the locomotive service business. EMDs need service just as the GE units do. So if you have everything set up to do one brand of locomotive it would be foolish not to do work on the other brand of locomotive when the opportunity presents itself. Read Jack Welch’s first book for an understanding of GE business plan. There is a lot of self serving crap in the book but some insightful thought of why GE is doing the things you see them doing now.
Actually it’s the equipment that was used that involves GE. They weren’t rebuilt by them… EJ&E shops do the rebuilds on all their power, which they own. The 38-3 has the Q-Tron QES control system and some other stuff.

I don’t remember exactly when but last year sometime. My cousin told me that someone taped it and saw that it was an EMD loco and then they called GE. GE didn’t disagree or agree that it was an EMD loco, but that commercials where off the air for awhile and then when the new ones came out they changed the locomotive in the commercials.
