Hi I have a Genesis 2-8-2 in HO and I would like to put dcc & sound in it I am in the process of building a 12x11 layout so right now I am working on it and my loco’s so I won’t lose intrest from repition. can someone recomend a decoder for a guy on a budget.

The big problem with the Athearn Genesis 2-8-2 is how the decoder is inserted through a slot in the front of the tender. For sound, you have to open up the tender to put a speaker into it because the slot is not tall enough to allow a properly baffled speaker to simply be pushed into the tender.
I’ve never tried to put sound into the one I have so I don’t know how to open up the tender. Perhaps someone else can chime in with some instructions on how to do that.
The tender will have to be opened up before selecting a decoder and speaker to determine what will fit.
Your loco has a 9 pin interface on the pigtail. Because of this (making the install very easy) I suggest the Soundtraxx Tsunami TSU1000 Medium Steam or the QSI Revolution-U (with appropriate steam sounds uploaded to it).
The difficult part of the install is finding room for a speaker and baffle (you NEED the baffle in this case).
This is a very easy install. Should only take about 5 minutes.

The tender floor is easily pried out of the tender shell, not unlike the floor of an Athearn box car.
