Genesis suck! Stick with the F40PH

At least the Grand Canyon Railway has a few F40PHs.

CSX bought a couple too. They look sharp in CSX colors.

I think Philip Anshutz has 3 F40s in DRGW colors on the ski train.

Metrolink has at least one.

Caltrains has a bunch of em’

Ace has a few.

Via still runs them.

I think the MBTA still has a bunch.

I also heard that Doyle McCormick is or has got one, but I don’t know if there’s any truth to that. Can someone verify this?

Please have some knowage before making accusations like that crap…

The F40’s replaced the Funits, and it was their turn to go…the Genesis locomotives may look like a brick with a 45 degree angle cut into them but the proforme great… are more efficant… and comply with stricter unoin laws for crew men.[;)]

Smart decisiion I think… a case of bad styling perhaps…

Try looking beond what’s pritty!!![;)]

I work at a museum and I bet the other members would agree with me that it would be nice to have a F40PH.

Well, my favorite passenger engine is the FP45. But, we all know how bad those were. Ran terrible, couldn’t see a thing, were noisey as hell, and it was a hassle to climb up into the cab. And those were the nice parts, ha ha[:D]. But seriously, F40s were great, but their time in long-haul Amtrak service was up. That’s why so many commuter railroads snatched them up. They were origonally intended to be the Amtrak commuter/short haul engines while the SDP40Fs handled the long trains, but since we all know what happened to them, Amtrak put the F40s into everything service.
Then they got the P32-8Ws, which rode like crap and hand tons of mechanical problems (they still survive as Amtrak switchers and back up locomotives, though). Then the P40 came out, and later the P42. As ugly as they may be (I personally love them), they are a newer alternative to the aged F40s, many of whom were nearly falling apart towards their end. Most were rebuilt into cabbages, some were sold, shopped, and began new lives for other railroads. Thus the legacy of Amtrak F40s came to a close.

And to my knowledge, the toilet was back behind the cab on an F40 like a P42, not in the nose.

Yes, it would be nice to have one, but HOW are you going to fix it up!? It simply is not feasable!

I’m sure that you, as an expert engineer and mechanic, know everything about locomotives. You’re a railfan. Why be such a jerk?

His post had no information backing it up! And I am not just a railfan. I do work with locomotives!

Why dont you check the Tenn Railfan thing and mabbe youll see why im being such an ***!

I’m going to have to agree with that. I don’t see how it’s so terrible to replace one box (the F40) with another(the Genesis), especially if the new box is better on the crew than the old one, and if the new one is better on the environment.

As a railfan I’m tired of just seeing the Metra F40’s on the UPWest line when I go railfanning in Chicago, I’m ready for something new to photograph. I also like the Genesis’s looks, I think they’re rather handsome.

The crapper was in the nose I have a F40PH instruction manual on my computer. Just like everything else museums seem to have we would slowly fix it up while keeping it as a static display (we have a oil fired tank engine that really needs fixing! For that we would need a around $200,000) Or if the engine is in really bad shape scrap the engine and put in a smaller one (A Big Mack engine might work but you wouldn’t have the same HP lol).

Certainly not the same HP! Instead of pulling 20 cars, you could pull 3 cars! LOL

WE have a 15 ton. Mack swicher built in the 1930’s at the lsrm (lake superior railway museam) and it can pull 4 hevey weight car’s…at about 3m.p.h.[;)][:D]

I know I do like the P42’s and the F40’s but the F40’s were having problems left and right so they were essentally nearing the end of there life.

Lots of F40PH’s still in Metra suburban service, still going strong (but slowing down, like we all do when we age).

Regarding the ‘cabbage’ conversions: the engineers loved them, due to the greatly increased safety and visibility. In addition, the ‘cabbages’ did not replace a second locomotive, they replaced the incredibly dangerous cab-cars Amtrak used.

In answer to the comparison:
F40PH=EMD
Genesis=GE

i actually prefer the genesis. F40 always came off as ugly to me. i was never a fan of the widenose cab plus a draper taper body. call me crazy, but i just think the Genesis looks better.

Oh god… 'nuff said.

I think one sentence will sum this up:

Railroad companies don’t exist to please railfans.
