I was wondering if freight traffic has increased between nelson,ill and chicago,ill since the new connection in edelstien,ill off of the BNSF has been put in or is it not complete yet.thank you.

The connection is in, and operational. Hard to say whether it’s brought about an increase (maybe someone who sees the Nelson end of things could tell us). Perhaps when the trackwork is done later this year we’ll be able to gauge something.

Also, keep in mind that some of this traffic over the connector may only go as far east as Global 3 (Rochelle), about 25-30 miles east of Nelson.

Thanks for the info im thinking about going to nelson to railfan do you now if it’s okay to watch trains thier or is off limits. Im thinking the UP action thier is awesome.

Bruce, I’ve never spent any length of time at Nelson (as a railfan, that is!), but there are some public roads that go next to the tracks on the south side of the main line. Bring your own shade!

(Others who have been there might be a little more helpful.)

Thanks CARL i have been to rochelle and clinton and elmhurst just looking for a change of scenery. also hoping to catch the haritage units.

Hmmm I might have to make my way Rochelle, and the surrounding environs.

Sounds interesting and I find I like shooting in rural areas.

I don’t know if this is a lot of help, but here’s a shot taken on Nelson Rd.

I parked on the road, and walked to the crossing. If you look down the tracks, you’ll see the old coaling tower. There’s a road that parallels that, and kind of a gravelly parking area there. It’s probably UP property, but I’ve parked there and shot the coaling tower without any problems.

Nice place to railfan (I especially love that old coaling tower). Lots of trains, too.

Oh that looks very nice Chris at that spot and the coaling tower makes it that much nicer. lot of photo opps. I was wondering how many trains come off the st louis line thier and how close to the wye tracks that you are right there. that would make a very neat spot to watch trains.

i have been trying to get down to Rochelle for a while. being able to see the geneva sub as well as the BNSF main, which i have fanned at in Alma several times. this will make me try harder to get down there :smiley:
