Jeesh, if I could weather like that, and get that kind of money for it, well, I would, um, you know, I would buy that train, and that one over there, and that one to your left, and um, wait, I might as well stop now, since I can’t weather like that.[:p]
Considering the time he has invested in detailing them I don’t think the price is unreasonable at all. In my shop that would be about 12.5 hours labor not considering the price of the materials. At least two people were wiling to part with $800 to gt them so who am I to argue with them?
I do know that I am going to have to settle for my own weathering. Unless Aggro dos some N scale before he gets that well known.
Melloow mike has done an excellent job, no doubt about it. Is it worth the money? Somebody thinks so.
To some this is a toy, to others a hobby. And then there are those it is an obsession and an art form. Hopefully it is going to a layout worthy of such work.

I looked at the list of bidders, and saw a name that I recognized from the forum. He stopped well short of the winning bid, but was willing to pay over $400.
For those who don’t have that kind of money to throw around, myself included, I guess the thing to do is brush up on your weathering skills.
That was some very impressive work, but $810 worth??? Just think of all of the other things you could get with that money. You could easily buy a small fleet of those cars, and practice weathering yourself. How about a few BLI engines, or 7 or 8 Atlas or Katos?
How about spend $100 on a good Badger or Paasche airbrush, another $100 for a good compressor, $50 on assorted paints, spend a summer learning how to use it and do it yourself?
I not knocking the seller, lucky [censored], he should do more of them, start up a garage industry, but the buyer has to one of those “more money than sense” people, 5 to 1 he’ll claim he painted it[}:)]
BTW I’ll never complain about a $100 1/20.3 scale frieght car ever again!
Never ment to knock the artist, as I said he’s got a hellova potential cottage industry there.
My point was that while these are obviously very very good jobs, maybe the best. You’ll never know if your the NEXT MellowMike unless you TRY it yourself![;)]
Walthers spine cars seem to go double their value anyway(When they’re assembled)on eBay, Let alone custom painted, weathered, detailed, and including trailers. And the fact that it’s from Mellow-Mike adds at least $50 to it. Yes, he’s gifted alright, but $810? It jumped $300 dollars in about 30 minutes! I was watching it until about 30 min. left then I left the computer. It was at $500 something when I left, and when I came back, it was over and had gone up to $810(Of course).
vsmith,
I should have tried to use the universal “you” and not come off like I was aiming at your comment personally. Sorry bout dat.
I was just trying to point out his talents go way beyond tools and techniques. I believe he has an artistic background and uses that along with a sincere love of what he does to the utmost advantage. Mikes modeling has elevated the “art” of weathering to to an almost unreachable standard.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention another artist who has taken the term “weathering” to another level, Rust…er, Rich Divizio. Rich and others share their weathering secrets in the Model Trains Weathered Forum, reachable through this link.
