Get your "Dream-Plan-Build" DVD from CTT? Thoughts?

I received a sample promotional DVD from CTT Called Dream-Plan-Build.

Pretty neat. Enjoyed the Tony Lash layout vidio. Some HO stuff there so I guess it is for all Model Railroad and Trains fans too.

If you got one what do you think?

I almost forgot. I haven’t received one, but would love to get one. I believe many of the plans are from the Kalmbach book “101 layouts you can build.” A great book! Are they sending a copy randomly or to all subscribers?

Another one on the way. Be on sale soon as it is arriving at the publisher. *** Teal’s book on the repair and maintenance of modern toy trains. Add for it in Nov. issue of CTT.

To be honest, my first thoughts were “I don’t like receiving unsolicited merchandise.” However, when I read that I could return it in the same box, post-paid, I relaxed.

Haven’t had a chance to view the DVD yet, but I probably will tomorrow night. If I like it, then, yeah, I’m in!

I thought it was great. After watching it, I was inspired to work on my own little N scale layout more! I just wish I knew how much the new releases would be.

Sent it back.

Watched it last night. Pretty good, except some of the scenery segments were basically re-runs from one of Kalmbachs scenery tapes.

Hmm, I didn’t get one - wish I did. Sounds interesting.

Doug, they don’t like us. [:(] Mail distribution I’m sure.

Same here.

If in the $10-$15 range (first one being $9) then I’m in. If they start hitting that $30 mark, then probably not. For sure found it interesting that no price point was included for subsequent mailings.

One came in the mail today. Didn’t open the DVD yet, haven’t decided if I even want to tempt myself. I will probably just send it back. Did I read the literature correctly that I really don’t have to do anything at all with it?

I don’t know what the literature says, but you are under no obligation to buy or return any unsolicited material that arrives in the mail, even if the return mail and packaging is free. This is a fairly new marketing tactic that is being used by a increasing number of businesses and organizations. I recently received a similar offering (a CD) from my old alma mater, and elected to return it. I could just as well have kept it, but really wasn’t interested and did not want to get into one of those never-ending and difficult to stop book-of-the-month or album-of-the-month kind of things.

Matter of fact, it does say (twice) in the enclosed literature that you are under no obligation to send the DVD back if you don’t want to.

I got one yesterday. I think it is going to Model Railroader subscribers. The literature says if you “opt in” that each DVD is $9 if I read it correctly. Haven’t had time to look at it. Maybe this weekend (Ha! like I have any spare time then either!).

I got it too. I am keeping it but not paying, sorry.

I decided many, many moons ago that I pay no respect to companies that send things to me that I didn’t ask to be sent to me. I just keep the item. I don’t even feel guilty any more.

I get so many “offers” it’s disgusting in a way. I look at it as “hey, I didn’t ask for you to send this to me?”.

Update:
Well, I just watched it. I think I’ll be nice and return it instead of just keeping it. Funny, several sequences seem to be Tracks Ahead footage. Anyone notice that?

I’m glad they sent mine. It was interesting. I hope the future releases are
reasonably priced.

Having received other unsolicited merchandise in the mail (CD’s, DVD’s, books and magazines), I always send them back at the sender’s expense. Why? Because I’ve always ended up with dozens of dunning letters demanding that I pay for their goods, and threats of legal action if I don’t (those letters get handed over to my local post office for action by the USPS - I’m told there is a fine involved). As a charter subscriber to CTT, I was very disappointed that Kalmbach, whatever the intent, has done such a mailing to it’s customers. If I want something, I’ll buy it myself. I’ve dropped internet companies and credit card companies for doing it, but I’d hate to drop my subscription to CTT for that reason. But if it happens again, I will.

If you do not want the to join and pay $9 for this DVD, keep it or pass it one to another. It will cost CTT more to pay the postage back than the cost of the DVD and case (probably less than 25 cents).

I got one and found it very educational and entertaining. I will investigate further.
