Looks like LS&I’s u30c’s may not last past this summer according to CTC Board/Railraods Illustrated. Seeing as the new corporate parent of the railroad has spent serious cash to replace the fleets on the rest of it’s ore roads. I’ve heard rumors of everything from ex-up sd50’s to brand new AC’s from GE. Who knows… Either way, if you’re a fan of the UBoats, get 'em while you can… You’ve been warned [:)]

I live too far south in Michigan to make the drive to the Upper Peninsula in less than 8 Hours. I would like to drive up there. I would need a long vacation to find all of the GE U30C Diesel-Electric Locomotives.

Freight Equipment that definitely will soon disappear are older Norfolk & Western and Southern Railway Box Cars and Open-Top Hoppers.

Andrew

I would love to see the LS&I get some SD50s and paint them up in the old red/yellow paint scheme. That would justify the final moments of the C30-7s.

Phil

No need to. I’ll just steal mine off of Flikr.[:-,]

. ( Just kidding )

I was through that area about 20 years ago. The countryside is pretty, but some of the little towns were on the ragged edge. I never would have believed, that you would have to stop at a gas station, and go inside, to ask if the station was still in operation.[B)]

We had a guy from LS&I on the 3um asking about the first batch of UP ex-CNW C40-8s that have now gone back to the lessor (and out to Albia, IA). Sounds like they may have been out of their price range, but who knows…

Things are still good there. My wife is from Ishpeming, and I always enjoying visiting there. Not much left except for the mines and schools (my father-in-law works at the Tilden mine).

“What’s yellow and has a lot of fins? An Ishpeming school bus!!” (Let’s see who gets that one)

The Finns are the humanoid variety and are inside that yellow submarine on wheels.

Ya, shure, you betcha.

Reminds me of a former boss, who was of Finnish extraction and grew up in Min-ne-so-ta, ya. Between his thick upper-Midwest twang and my biscuits-and-syrup Southern drawl, it took us six months to understand each other.

Oh ya dontcha kno.

Why yes, we do have an sd45, right here at the Illinois Railway Museum
