Depending on were you live, I do know that CSX is hiring. As a matter of fact they are indemand. I do know for a fact that CSX is short on people in Philadelphia , PA and Louisville, KY. I am assuming that you must live close to Philly since you were thinking about a job with NJT, you might want to try Septa too, if it’s not too far of a communte for you; Septa is always looking for people also.
If you have the choice between CSX, SEPTA or NJ Transit…go Transit. I know several people that left CSX for Transit and not one regretted it. Also, everyone I know that left SEPTA for CSX or Transit feels the same way.

Well if you feel like moving west IC&E is wanting anyone with a heartbeat also UP BNSF Iowa Interstate. Hiring 75 conductors here in my terminal ( dont know where we are going to put them but they said that about my class too ) But I agree if you go transit you lift babies look at cute girls and never get dirty. I have thought about getting my Metra quals in and being a baby lifter myself for the heck of it.
Ohio Central has had a listing on the Railroad Retirement website ( http://www.rrb.gov/PandS/Jobs/rrjobs.asp#train ) for quite some time now for conductors at Pittsburgh and Youngstown. They might hire and train you.
