Getting parts from scrapped engines/cars?

Is there any way of getting parts from scrapped cars and locomotives? Just something to display in the trainroom. I do have a diesel engine piston for about a 7" bore but would like to find one for a 12" bore and some other interesting stuff.

Locomotive scrap yards are in the business of selling used parts. Naporano’s in New Jersey use to sell used power assemblies, water and oil pumps to marine customers in the New York harbor area and in one case a complete engine to someone that was going to repower his tug. Of course they expect to get paid for it. Still fairly pricey. I understand that the core value of a good used piston is about $250.

Boyd, what are you looking for? I sell secondhand rail car parts in Mankato MN. We seldom do locomotives, but we scrap plenty of cars. We also run 2 ALCO switch engines, a 1940 HH660 and a 1954 S-4. Matt

I recommend you contact Matt. Duh, duh, duh, don’t try to do it yourself! They make handcuffs and leg irons out of re-cycled steel!
