Has any one heard any time tables as to when rail service will be restored to New Orleans. The sooner the port is reopened and the economic base is back up and running the sooner the comunity will start to rebuild.
Norfolk Southern restored the bridge yesterday. All the routes except CSX are now in fairly good shape, but obviously traffic will be a bit slow until the port capacity increases. There are daily news stories about the recovery efforts at: http://www.railserve.com/railnews/hurricane_katrina.html
I have not seen on TV or read in print media, anything about rail service, problems or plans except CSX paid their taxes in advance. This is to their great credit. I wonder if any of the airlines paid or helped? Did see that Fedex helped ship relief supplies. Anyone with answers?

Except for CSX and Amtrak, service has been restored, but not to all facilities of the other railroads. CSX is working hard to restore service.

Operating New Orleans buses are being used in rescue work, with some relocated to Beloxi to help the bus system there cope with increased traffic due to New Orleans people there. There are plans to eventually restore streetcar service, but buses will have a more immediate priority. No damage to the St. Charles LIne historic cars, but the Riverfront and Canal replica cars will require much work. All the Canal line track and most wire is OK, the other two lines require some rebuilding, particularly the wire do to trees.
