Check out the forum on Garden Railways. I remeber there is even a whole section on running with batteries.
Here on the WP we took a standard Lifelike RDC and put a 9 volt battery in it to run the motor… For control we just purchased one of these new battery operated cars… About 15 bucks… We then made a small circuit to convert a few things and now run the car over the layout. It runs for about an hour on one battery. We put a resistor across the wheels and it now is picked up by detection so the Dispatcher “sees” it all over the railroad. Only problem we have is a few of the signals are direction sensitive so they stay red as the system has no clue which way you are running
wowzers, never knew that this was a popular thing to do, if your wondering why i wi***o run an engine off of battery power, im creating a very small layout, 11x11 inches on a piece of scrap 1/4 inch plywood, from there, ill landscape the thing, lay the oval track(standard flex track) and incase the thing in a box with a lid, it would be about 3 inches deep, about the same size as a normal achool binder,…so in the middle of math class or any class for that matter, when im my work, i can whip out this layout which would always be in my bag, and train away…also the plan calls for 2 small compartments, or maybe a seperate case to hold the battery and power pack as well as some engines and rolling stock all in N scale…

Maybe you should look into Z scale and have a double main line[:D][:0][;)]
sounds like a cool project!!
bill
have you seen the prices in Z-scale!!!, nevermnid how hard it is to find, the prices are outrageous, 35 bucks for a damm european box car?!
im one of those “cheapo railroaders” i hate spending money, especially if its mine. ive done HO for the last 10 years, and since we tore down the old layout ive been itching to do a new scale…so i did N…prices are cheaper in N, my local hobby shops sells around 45 variations of different rolling stock for 3.99 a piece, and engines were also failry cheap, N scale, its the cheap***friend!
