The thought of a gg-1 has crossed my mind several times, but the price has kept me from buying one. I am now able to buy one though and want to see if they are worth the price tag and which manufacturer has the better all around engine, price aside. I know the LGB version has sound and MTS and the USA has QSI sound and dcc. So engine is easier to operate? Which is the smoother running engine? Which has a better sound system?
You know I have to investigate all the options on the market. And by the way, I do have R5 curves. Obviously I am leaning to the LGB, but I have to look at everybody.
The USA GG1 goes round R3 4ft radius LGB track no problem but that’s the minimum. It looks superb and weighs a ton, it has a carrying handle that screws into the top of the loco to get it from the box onto the track.
The one belonging to my friend runs fine on slightly undulating track and he choose it over the LGB one because he thought it looked better from the side as there was too much daylight under the LGB chassis. He liked the look of both though.
The reviews I’ve read also said the USA one is closer to scale, although narrow on track gauge, while the LGB one appeared to have a bit of selective compression in certain dimensions.
I would really say that you’d need to see them side by side if it’s down to looks but if you need to run on R1 or R2 the it’s got to be LGB or my mate would recommend the USA one if you have the larger curves.

This is the beauty of bending your own rail, i can have any curve i like, i do have an R5 but i also have an R2.5 as well as R4. in different places, you can also have any length you want down to the last millimetre.
