Subject: 3/21 – Update on Gilbert Freitag
Good news! (Sunday, 3/21) Thanks to all of your prayers, Gilbert’s temperature has been down since they changed his antibiotics yesterday (Sat.) morning. This is a milestone since when his temperature goes up, he is less responsive. Yesterday, they cut his ventilator back to 0 for the first time. Thus, he was breathing on his own with the vent there only in case he needed it for assistance. This morning, all of the doctors were pleased with his progress. They continue to wean him off the vent. He is on it a while and off it a while. When he is off, he has a trach collar over the trach opening with only a tiny bit of oxygen to help him along. This is encouraging!&nb

Any update on Gill? I know many of us have been praying for this talented guy!

Last update from his wife was 5/7:

Many thanks for all your update requests—so good to receive ongoing support. It was a struggle deciding where to take Gilbert from TIRR. His last day of allowable 3 weeks of stay at an acute care facility was yesterday, April 6.

Although I would have loved to take him home, after much thought I convinced myself that more therapy at a place with a gym would be better than that received by in-home therapists at this time. He has made such good progress in these past 3 weeks at TIRR.

So after some research, touring, and hearing favorable comments on their therapy, I decided on Garden Terrace, a Skilled Nursing and Rehab facility. It was also suggested by our social worker at TIRR as many of their patients go there when discharged. It is a short distance from the Medical Center and fairly centrally located. It has several small garden areas to stroll and free surface parking (a relief for our family and friends).

At this time I’m not sure how long this stop will be, but most importantly we pray we’re going HOME from here.

Since they have no regular therapy schedules, all we know is he will get all three types of therapy weekdays and should be finished by about 4pm.

There is no phone in the room.

Although I never knew Gil personally,I’ve seen pics ofhis layout in MR andRMC.

My thoughts go to his family in their hour of need.
