Glenwood springs canyon colorado phase 3

I want to thank all that gave me advise on the building of Glenwood springs canyon. I am now going to add some trees, has anyone ever used supertree’s and if so how do they come when you buy them. i know there is a little work to make them look good but do they come with some foilage on them already or just a bunch of plain trees with nothing on the branches? Here are some pics of my progress Thanks again.

Very nice. I can almost imagine a brace of SD40T-2’s pulling a coal train thru or some GP40-2’s with a string of 89’ flat cars and z-vans.

My dream is to model Ruby Canyon some day when I get some space.

Great job.

Wow!!! This is AWESOME! I remember your thread, and you got the colors spot on for those rocky cliffs.

That really looks like Glenwood now.

Don’t go crazy on the trees though. The trees are usually bunched together, but then there is also big areas just rocks and dirt areas without any trees. I would put the trees on those flatter areas.

You need some Aspen trees also!

That sound cool i don’t know where ruby canyon is but it sound neat. I enjoyed the research almost as much as the construction. As you can see in the photo’s i have the colorado river base formed that wraps around the canyon and am hoping to add the raised interstate 70 on the other side of the river Hopefully sounds like alot of work. Oh ya, the I-70 highway is a great idea. You must do that.

We also need to see some more photos with a train?

You should buy the hardbound book " Wooing a Harsh Mistress: Glenwood Canyon’s Highway Odyssey", by John Haley. It covers the construction of I70 thru the canyon. It’s a great read with lots of photos. It’s out of print, but there are several copies listen on Amazon.com

A $25 plastic box of Scenic Express Super Trees will make about 60 trees. I got the $120 crate of Super trees and made over 300 trees. Super trees are a form of moss that has fine branches with no foliage. For close-up trees your use dried twigs from weeds, ( or Sage, which comes in a package that makes the trunks of about 20 trees. The trunks of Super Trees are too small in diameter, and are light brown in color. I glue several Super Tree branches to the Weed or sage trunks and spray them the color of deciduous trees. Next, I dunk three trees at a time in Matte Medium and the spray with spray adhesive. You get various green colored bottles of WS Coarse or Medium Turf, and sprinkle it onto the bare fine branches of the Super Trees. I much prefer the realistic appearance of Super Trees, (compared to Puff ball trees). For more distant trees, one does not need to make trunks. You just glue the Super Tree trunk to the stained ledges on a hillside. I drill holes for the trunks in the layout before spraying the varied brown forest floor. Then vacuum the white powder nd finally spray on the brown. I do not glue my trunks to the layout, since I change the foliage color with the seasons. Bare Super Trees make excellent Winter trees, or dead trees (as shown). Small Super tree parts can be used for shrubs. Another idea for what appears to be a conifer forest on a narrow ridge, is to cut a zig-zag pattern from a thin sheet of sponge and the layer it on the top of a narrow ridge. Click on the photos to enlarge them. Then click on “Previous” or “Next” arrows ,to see other views of my 24’x24’ around the garage loft layout.
