Anyone put together/have any opinions on Gloor Craft Model (GCM) kits? I know that they are wood & metal craftsman kits but that doesn’t scare me. (I’ve put together a Suncoast Model and a couple of Alexander Scale Model kits.) The reason for asking is that a GCM caboose kit is up for sale on eBay and I just wanted to know how prototypically accurate they tend to be.
I don’t know about the caboose kit. Ten or twenty years ago, I built the Quality Craft (Gloor by another name) #205 SFRD class RR-37 50’ superinsulated reefer, and the Quality Craft B&O wagon-trop boxcar. I certainly enjoyed them, although I discovered after the fact that I put the door on the B&O boxcar upside down!
Over the years I have assembled several of the Gloor Craft/Quality Craft kits. They had great instructions and the wood parts were excellent. Many were cut to length but some trim required measuring & cutting. The cast metal parts were normal quality for that type of thing at the time. They had lengths of wire for handrails & grabs which I normally replaced with pre-made ones from Tichy, Details West, etc.
Remember to either add weight before enclosing the bodies or leave the roof or underframe as a removable item. Trucks & couplers were not included in any of the kits.
