Sorry if this question has already been answered: I searched the forums and did not see it. My son and I are ready to make our Kato track permanent so we can start on the scenery and town. I’ve put the track on styrofoam so that we could have varying levels on our table. Does anyone have a suggestion for glue that will not melt the foam but will keep the track secure for the long haul? Thank you VERY much for your time. Cheers.
I hope you don´t mean the beaded, white stuff, because that is surely not strong enough!
Gluing the track to Styrofoam requires a non-solvent based glue, like white glue, although this stuff will not “stick” to the track pretty well. Allow for sufficient time for the glue to cure. Latex caulk might also do!
Thank you very much.
What you need to do is check out this months MR . Look at the article about building the Salt Lake Route #3. The author does exactly what your asking. I would advise also using the cork as he did between the foam and the Kato Unitrack Extruded foam transfers noise like you can’t believe, some 3/16" cork that can be purchased at AC Moore will do the trick. My proffered method of securing track these days is Latex adhesive caulking. Sets up real fast and holds things in place extremely well. You can remove it if you choose to later with a 1" putty knife and a lot of patients , expect to take up some of the foam with it as well.
While your method may work, the track laying process you described in regards to the Salt Lake Route project layout is incorrect. If you read the article and/or look at the pictures on page 35 of the March 2010 issue, the Unitrack is supported by cork roadbed which is directly attached to a cookie-cutter plywood base, not styrofoam.
Six of one, half a dozen of another Chuck; I think the point is to put something between the sub-roadbed or table top and the track.
For my Christmas Tree layout I put the Unitrack on a wool rug. I thought the track was somewhat “noisy” with my ConCor Burlington Zephyr (HO).
