Glueing Plaster of Paris!

Has anyone glued Plaster of Paris to Plaster of Paris! I was thinking with PL300/400 as it seems to hold everything? What would you use? Or what have you used?

At various times I have used a hot glue gun, Elmer’s white glue, and even more POP.

I use Elmer’s general purpose white glue. Bonds the plaster pieces tight. Only thing is you have to find a way to hold them together while it sets.

Several types of adhesive will work. You want an adhesive that will bond to the plaster yet not be absorbed by it. Thinner, water-based glues won’t hold well because the plaster pulls the water out of the glue before the glue has a chance to set.

I’ve used a contact cement like Goodyear’s PlioBond, but you have to have some good mating surfaces for it to work properly. I’ve also used different caulks; the adhesive ones work better. The caulk fills in any gaps between the surfaces and holds well. Don’t use too much or you’ll get squeeze out.

Hope this helps.

Darrell, quiet…for now

Well, the plaster that I use is drywall compound. Whenever I need to join two pieces, I just use more compound. I don’t know if this works for plaster of paris, but it is worth a shot. You may need to use a thicker batch, though.

Hope this helps!

If you’re using a water based glue (like Elmers) pre-wet the plaster, this will slow down the absorbtion of moisture and give the glue time to work. This also works if you use the plaster as a glue. First spritz on some water to both pieces and then paint on some soupy mix of POP and hold the two pieces together. Once the surfaces are mated, don’t let them move for at least 1 hour, better yet leave it alone for a good 6 hours.
