Gluing Roadbed

Hi group. I’m building a new layout and some of the areas are covered with foamboard. Can I glue my cork roadbed directly to the foam or should I put something else on the foamboard first?

Thanks, Paulie

I myself use yellow carpenters glue or Liquid nails for projects to glue roadbed down weather it be to plywood or extruded foam. Many use latex caulk and claim it has much better adhesion properties and also provides a dampening effect so as not to transmit as much sound. I have yet to try it so I can’t say weather or not it works as well as claimed but I have read where you must use a specific type of caulking as many caulking products are designed never to dry hard leaving you with a squishy mess.

I used Mono Latex Caulk. I use it to stick cork to foam and track to the cork. I stuck track right to spline and I also stuck track to my cement roadbed across the fireplace. The great thing about caulk is, it holds tight but can easily be pride up if required.

Paulie,

You can use any of the adhesives noted already. I used Elmer’s White glue and it worked fine.

You can glue directly to the foam (Also I reccomend blue or pink “dense” foam instead of the white beaded foam.) but you might want to use roadbed or more foam to produce realistic contours on your layout. For example, yards and shortlines can consist of track glued directly onto the foam but mainlines should probably have some roadbed (cork or whatever) to make it look better.

Have fun!
