Illinois Central bought the GM&O, and in turn has now been purchased by Canadian National. I remember that GM&O passenger trains pulled by E units were sometimes routed over Illinois Central tracks through my home town when flooding or derailments occurred on the GM&O back in the 1950s .
I have two GM&O GP(9?) diesel models from Kato and several GM&O boxcars from the likes of Athearn, AccuRail, and Roundhouse. If I recall correctly, the IC bought the GM&O sometime in the early 1970’s. I have one GM&O steam engine, a 2-8-2 Mikado. If you check around, there might be a GM&O Historical Society somewhere that can provide more information about their motive power.
For steam, you can’t go wrong with USRA light Pacifics and Mikados since the GM&O had both.
You might want to check out the GM&O Hiistorical Society.http://www.gmohs.org/
