I’m not furious, but am quite angry! The stupid people out there don’t realize how much they can mess with someone’s head with such pranks. Here’s an innocent person just trying to earn an honest living - an engineer going about his business and has to deal with this crap!! It’s dark, there’s a small object on the track ahead, it resembles a human shape.
Not a wuss. However, everyone involved in train and engine service must realize that the question is not if they will kill some one in the performance of their normal duties, but when. Any one operating an engine outside yard limits will eventually do in someone, either a tresspasser or someone trying to beat the train at a crossing.
have you ever been on a train and see something on the tracks ahead of you and realize that something is someone lying on the tracks passed out or whatever and before you know it you run over them. then after about 45 seconds after you put the trian in emegerency you stop only to realize now you have to walk back and see if that person is alive. when you finally get back to were the person is that person is cut up into about 15 peaces. yes it has happened to me, but only once. i know people that work out here that it has happened too 3, 4 and even five time. now evertime i am on a train it the daytime and i see something on the tracks ahead of me and i am not sure what it is the thought is always in the back of my head, is that a person?
Whether it’s someone trying to beat the train, walking the tracks and not paying attention, or deliberate suicide. And yeah, that happens too! We have one community locally that had something like 5 deaths in one year, and I think 3 of them were suicides, people who deliberately walked in front of trains.
Or the incident that happened to a crew in my father’s district, many years ago (I think he was an assistant trainmaster at the time): Guy parks his car across the tracks, at a grade crossing, where the train’s crew couldn’t see him until the last minute because of a curve. Hears the train coming, turns his back to the train and puts his hands on the car, with inevitable results.
Actually, I have had to scrape someone’s guts off my train. Granted, not much was on the front, just some torso parts, and granted it was 5pm, not 3am. However, the rest of what was a person was chopped into about two dozen pieces, most of which I had to pull off of the various protrusions under the train. When someone sits on the rail in front of the cab-car of a suburban train going 70 mph, there is very little left that is recognizable: parts of a skull, bits and pieces of torso, arms, legs, internal organs…shall I go on? And after our train finally got into Chicago, we got off that equipment, got on a different set of equipment, and continued on with our tour of duty.
And that was only one of the nine fatalaties I had to deal with in my twenty years as an engineer. So I believe I am qualified to make my original statement.
Apologies for the mis-conception - its just was the way your post came across.
I agree that taking indefinite leave for a gnome is over-the-top, but I don’t like calling people wusses over stuff like this. Scraping people or animal guts may not bother me too much, but thats me - I can’t account for other people… And if he’s that unstable maybe its better…
Zardoz, please disregard James post, as he acted rash and did not take the time to look at the whole topic. He also does not come over here much so he doesnot know that you are a locomotive engineer.
He has not had experience killing children with locomotives, he is only 17 for gawd sakes. He may or may not have been in a CN locomotive when they almost killed a child…im guessing not.
So please dont flame James, just disregard his post…
I’m talking about my dad when he comes home if he has hit someone and killed that person. I don’t think you have ever seen somebody like that after an accident has occured, Max. So how would you know.
Sorry if I had said that to myself but I still go with what I say. and I don’t care what you think. He is not a wuss for thinking it was a kid.
This is not a rash statement either. Unless you have had a car sail right over the locomotive and actually smash and destroy the second locomotive then you have no idea what a person looks like after that. Then and only then will you understand how painful it is to see your father like that and I completely understand what that guy was going through. I don’t mean to upset you or anyone else in anyway.
I did not realized I had “flamed” anyone; it was not my intention. However, I think that for the record, I’ll just tell a brief story. At the time the following incident happened, my son was 12 years old.
My suburban train left Chicago that day at around 5pm. As I approached Rosehill cemetary on the CNW North line, I observed two children adjacent to the tracks, but in the clear. No big deal I thought, kids hang around the tracks all the time. And I could see that they were aware of my train.
As I got closer (maybe 100 yards away) the kids began playing “chicken” running across the tracks in front of my train, giving me the finger, dancing, those sort of antics. This is a popular game, and the one that goes last wins. No point setting the brakes, for I had not hit anything yet. The kids continued back and forth in front of me, crossing the tracks perhaps 3 or 4 times each.
With his friend standing next to the tracks watching, this boy began his final trip in front of my train (and I was now less than 50 yards away, going 70mph). As he proceeded to cross the rails, I noticed that he looked so much like my son that for a brief moment I wondered if he somehow had come to Chicago to see a friend.
As he crossed the outside rail, his foot caught the edge of the rail and he tripped and fell in between the rails. His friend made a motion to go towards him, but my whistle caused him to back off. A second later he disappeared under the nose of the unit, and a second after that was a little “thump”. I knew I had hit him. At 70mph. With his friend standing right next to the train. This boy that looked so much like my son I knew was dead.
When the police arrived, the now deceased boy’s friend was still standing there in shock, covered in his friends blood. I had many anxious moments in the cab, waiting to fin
Well guess what Max it happened with a small car and with my dad. He hit the car the car went flying over the first unit nicking the back end and then slamed and destroyed the back end of the second unit.
And explain to me how your father was involved in a railway accident while he was driving the train!!! That one I would love to know since your father doesn’t work for the railroad. You really have know idea what its like when this has happened with your father.
I’m sorry for your accident. I didn’t realize that it happened with you too. I feel sorry for you. I just thought that when you said he was a wuss that you had never experienced it. But I have been proven wrong. Sorry for everything I said.[:(]
But now I have to get this straight with Max since he has never experienced this with his father. I don’t think he truly understands.
James, when did I ever mention anything about it being my father? And I thought you meant car going through the grade crossing onto the train. Misunderstanding.
