Wow, a new tool to use. Lock enough posts, and at least from the outside, the whole thread will look like it is locked.
Nah- I think that myth is busted. As of right now, 15 out of the 24 posts on this thread, 63%, have been self- locked by their originators. Yet, the thread does not show up as being locked on the main page.
I suspect it’s simply a glitch in the software, like this stooopid, ever-changing font size that we have to deal with. In the past, I used my moderator super powers to edit literally hundreds of posts that showed up with teeny-tiny font that I couldn’t read.
Wait a minute. When I posted the last, the thread did indeed show up on the forum page as being locked with the padlock right next to the thread title. That probably cleared when you posted above without locking your post. Or maybe it cleared when I posted above your post and did not lock mine. I can’t recall if I checked.
But I would conclude that what ever it takes to get the thread title on the forum page to indicate it being locked, that indication will clear with the first post that is made without locking following a series of locked posts.
In that case, let me suggest the lock function is stooopid! as well. [(-D]
Yes!
Or maybe not?
schlimm- How did you go about getting that to lock?
Last post was locked, so it shows then as locked, though obviously really isn’t. Just to see, I did that with several other threads as well.
Hmmm…That’s the same thing that I was doing, but couldn’t seem to get it to lock. Maybe, my magic wand needs charging.[sigh]
It actually makes sense. The forum index shows the status of the last post, whatever it is, as the status of the thread. Since the moderator has to lock the thread from the first post, and then all of the following posts get locked too-- the last post would also at that point be locked and the official status would be locked. I suspect that if someone makes a post (new thread) and immediately locks it, then the whole thread is “locked” since nobody can find an unlocked post to reply to. At that point, probably only the moderator, or possibly the original poster, could modify the lock.
That’d be my guess. Why it’s even enabled and showing as a “feature” however, is beyond my pay grade!

Moral of the story:
If your favorite thread gets suddenly locked with warning, and there is no last post from a moderator, then maybe a guy should take the time to check it out, instead of giving the moderators both barrels. I’m just sayin’ [:-^]
Not to throw another factor into this fascinating and educational exploration of the self-locking function (not that I would ever self-lock – heck, they’ve been trying to lock me up for years, and I keep evading them – why would I make their job easier by self-locking?!?) – but …
I have sometimes gone into a post or discussion (from my email, because I was a “follower” and got an email notification of a new post), and then found that the thread had disappeared completely from the forum index! Any thoughts? Any relevence? Does anybody care?
So you’re the one, who keeps making those threads disappear completely from the forum index! [:-,]
Curious- is it not on the index, is simply just gone?
My conclusion is that there is no predictable and consistent behavior with this user locking function showing on the forum page next to the title that the thread is locked. I am not even convinced that this shows the same on everyone’s computer. I notice that when the thread shows the lock symbol on the forum page next to the thread title, sometimes the lock is gray and sometimes it is red.
I use some 3D cad software that can be full of bugs like this. It presents problems that have so many variations that it is impossible to accurately describe the problem, let alone fix it.
I think it’s more fun to think there is a conspiracy afoot.
Not sure how this forum software works, but on the aviation forum I moderate only moderators and administrators can lock threads.
Those varments must be some really fiendish evil-doers to take the time to conspire such a ginked up mess as the self-imposed forum quasi-lock function.
And, in the immortal words of that distinguised, elder statesman, Yosemite Sam: " Ah hates varments !"
Murph,
Our aviation forum is led by a board of six voting members and a seventh who only gets to break a tie (not the king between the rails). I can’t arbitrarily lock a thread without consent of the majority of the board.
OTOH, I can move a thread to boardroom discussion pending the decision of the majority. That’s something I contrast to another aviation forum where the owner was a real jerk and banned members because he didn’t like their posts.
I may not always agree with the mods on their decision, but I respect their right to do what they think is right. John Whitten has become very forthright and honest about his position and that of Kalmbach’s. I respect him for that, and try to abide by their rules. We should all try the same approach.
You were a mod on this forum and I am on another. Let’s get some sanity between us. It’s not an easy task.
This forum is owned by Kalmbach Publishing, and they do have a right to say what is posted here.
