Going Away

Aw, Scrap!

ROAR

Beats using them for an offshore reef, at least the metal can be recycled not thrown away.

Randy

These are newer cars (R-44s) and have no asbestos in them. They can be scrapped conventionally.

The older cars, the ones that were reefed had asbestos in them, and the cost of asbestos abatement would have negated any profit to be made by the scrapper.

Besides, the Fish need housing.

LIRR did not reef or scrap the M1s but Bombardier took them back in trade. Bomba sold them to Mexico as scrap since Canada does not have laws prohibiting the export of asbestos scrap (not that the cars ever set foot in Canada) while the US does.

Not only do I remember when those cars were new, I also remember when the R-32s were new. Heck, I was born in that same year as the R-10s! I have ridden on the Third Avenue El in Manhattan. But once upon a time, I was a skinny kid.

Once upon a time - weren’t we all?

You know what is really incredible is NYCTA is still using R 32’s while scrapping the newer R 46’s(10 years newer!).

Budd could really build them. And when did the LIRR 1st get M 1’s 1970 or 73? Brings back memories.

By the way when did the LIRR go to all high level platforms?

Thx IGN

Oh well. “Sic TRANSIT Gloria Mundi!”
