Any of you who have seen the James Bond Movie “Goldeneye” nows that there is a scene with a Military train in it.
All I can tell you guys is that is a Pure EMD product, since there are several runby’s with a 645E3 running in notch 8. The locomotive looks like an Eendcab switcher that has had alot of Armour added to it.
Does anybody now the locomotive model of this unit? Is it a fictional locomotive rebuilt from an actual locomotive, or does this model actually exists? I so, how many were preserved? What happened to this particular locomotive?
I am watching the movie right now, and from what I can see the engine is GONE!!!
it looked like an alco with the round radiator grill… or maybe it was a balwin… hell i dont know…just guessing here
csx engineer
It`s a British Class 20 heavily diguised, 1000hp, with a cab at one end, usually worked in pairs with cabs outermost. Just type Class 20 into Google to find some pics…Dave.
The loco # was 20188 once owned by Pete Waterman (music producer and judge on pop idol UK) and is now preserved at the Barrow Hill Motive Power Depot near Chesterfield. The shot was filmed on the Nene Valley Railway which is a preserved line near Peterborough using the loco and some ex British Rail Mk1’s which were all heavily disguised.

And always remember, you can’t go by the sound effects in any movie- they almost always have to record new or use stock sounds.
for more info on Britsh Rail Class 20 built by English Electric see:

whatever the goldeneye train is, it looks kool. i want one for my HO layout!
Well, Bachmann have a very nice OO scale (4mm=1ft scale, running on the same track as HO which is 3.5mm=1ft) Class 20, Lima used to make one but the drive unit isn’t so good (otherwise I’d be advising you to keep an eye open for an old Lima loco for conversion). The cars could be converted from old Mainline, Hornby or Lima MK1s - the Hornby model has separate sides so you could dismantle the car then either modify the existing sides or scratchbuild new ones from styrene sheet. Hope this is useful!
The Nene Valley Railway has been used as a location in a number of other movies including “James Bond: Octopussy” as it has a large number of European locos and stock.
Coincidentally 20188 - the locomotive used in the film - has just been fired up again after some restoration. http://www.preserved-diesels.co.uk/2005b/20188_2.htm for a photo.
Seems that it has moved south and now on the Swanage Railway in Dorset
In that case it also has the distinction of being the first loco to run thru the Channel Tunnel once track laying was finished. I’m a member of the Swanage Railway and last time I was down there one of the guys who works on that loco told me this.
(During the construction of the chunnel several ex-BR class 20’s were used on track laying trains. Most still survive, some in service with DRS (an open access operator) whilst 4 passed to a French shortline but have now returned to blighty.)
Tulyar15 - I don’t think it was involved in the tunnel construction work; it’s been on CTRL.
From memory the first locomotive through was one of the emission-controlled Schoma’s.
Now there’s a link to Mission Impossible 1, an awful film ( in my opinion ) with a highly improbable “Channel Tunnel” sequence.
I have to agree, the MI 1 movie was absolutely dire, a French TGV Atlantique set running in the Scottish borders with no overhead supposedly running to the Channel Tunnel, no Euro Shuttle’s at either portal and each of the tunnel bores is single track!!!
If the film makes or even the researches had cared to bother looking, it would have saved my dinner being lobbed at the TV set…doh
