Now that Morning Sun has stopped publishing books, who are the other publishers of good quality books? I know about Four Ways West and some of the historical societies occasionally print one, but is there anyone else. I’m not looking for histories going back to the 1800s, but mainly the standard 1-2 pics per page with extended, detailed captions and maybe a several page overview forward. Sort of like Morning Sun.
Referring to trains, I haven’t had a lot of experience with anyone other than Kalmbach/Firecrown–and, of course, both have done a good job (I rather enjoyed the book on the Lionel factories). To tell the truth, I don’t pay much attention to publishers.
I’d have to nominate Garbely’s, although I haven’t yet bought anything from them directly.
Arizona Hobbies used to be a place where you could look over a wide range of ‘specialist’ rail publications to assess their quality and then buy with good discount. They have just extensively changed their Web site and I haven’t checked since they e-mailed the heads-up, but I’d take a look.
What does D. Carleton advise?
Backshop, did you know that our store, shop.trains.com, carries books Kalmbach/Firecrown publishes but also those from other publishers? From your post, I assume you’re looking for prototype books. Here’s a link to the books we currently stock.
If you’re looking for a book with mostly photos and longer captions, might I suggest Classic Railroad Scenes or Along the Rails with J. David Ingles?
