I have built my first turnout using the fast tracks jig. I now have to paint the whole thing with a base color and weather accordingly after it dries or is installed on the layout.
I model the C&NW around Chicage to Milwaukee. The color of the ties should reflect that geographic area after many years aging.
What color should I start with? I am color blind so I need actual names of Floquil paint. I still prefer solvent based paints.
If you are using wooden ties, you might want to think stain rather than paint. Minwax has several shades close to tie colors. Sorry I don’t have one of their charts to give you some names. Liquid shoe polish can come close too. Remember all ties are not the same color. Some may have been replaced at different times, leading to different weathering from nearly black (creasote) new ties to light gray well weathered ones.
You’ll have to mask the wood ties, then prime those pc board ties before you do anything. After which you could perhaps paint them roof brown (or something similar) and then stain the wood ties. Or just prime and paint the whole works and follow it up with a rail painter and a bit of dry brushing on the ties…
Another thought for staining. You could mix up two or three batches of India ink and alchol with enough variation in color so that you could see the various grays.
Not necessary to special treat pc board ties. I simply brush all solder joints with a brass brush, then wash the complete turnout in water with dish soap and a plastic brush. Then I airbrush the entire turnout Railroad Tie Brown. Finally wipe off the railtops while the paint is still tacky.
