Good Evening All

Good evening all. I’d like to say hello. I’m relativly new to model railroading. I’ve only been involved for about 6 months. My railroad is freelanced and I’m taking the building of it very slowly, and reading every book, magazine, and interent posting i can find. I’ve got a few questions though.

Recently several older MDC locomotives fell into my lap. They run ok on my oval of ez track on the floor, but they warm up and get to smelling like they need some grease or oil. How do I do this? Also are they worth keeping? In my research i’ve seen photo’s of tenders with shacks on them what is their function? And, would the Bachman Spectrum 2-8-0 be a good starting place to model a Southern Pacific C-9 Consolodation/

Thank you very much for all the help.

Dave

Welcome to the hobby and the forum. This is a great place to hang out to learn new things, and offer new things.

I will leave the rest up to somebody that is more well versed than I am in loco maintenance.

Yup. It sure would. andrechapelon posted a thread involving somthing like that. You can search for it.

To lubricate those old MDC locomotives you must remove the boiler. There is usually a screw under the center front of the locomotive that holds the boiler to the frame. Put a small drop of light machine oil on the bearing at each end of the motor shaft and some light grease on the worm gear. Also oil the side rods and driver axles with the light machine oil.

The best lubricant is Dexron III Automatic Transmission Fluid if you have some of that around.
