I just received a sample order of an HO scale oak tree from JTT. I had high expectations for this but am very dissapointed. The leaves look great, but the trunk and large branches are constructed by winding multiple strands of something. The problem is the strands arent coated with anything other than paint. The spiral wound construction technique is blatantly obvious even from a distance.
Does anyone else make a good quality rendition of an oak tree? Cost is not an issue as I will pay for “the best”.
I am trying to model northern California where oak trees are common.
The best was a company called Oakey Dokey Oaks…quit making oak trees after the death of the owner. The trees were great. I would be curious to see if there are any ohter makers out there as I need at least another 20 or 30. I will probably end up making them myself…
The tree on the right is one of the Oakey Dokey trees.
Sage brush from the southwest is still the best for cheap easy Oak trees. Find a friend who winters in AZ and ask them to spend an hour on a desert hill side and bring a garbage bag back. It is that easy.
