I was just on Google Earth and decided to take a look at one of my favorite railfanning places: Mullan Pass in Montana. As I was thus looking at the Satellite picture of the whole area, the Idea came to me that this website is a great tool for making a prototype layout. Has anyone ever thought of that?
Actually, yes. This topic has come up a few times recently, using Google earth, Terraserver, and the various other satellite imaging porgrams.

Rather than have the same topic in two places, why not delete one of them
Google Earth is absolutely fasinating and can be very useful. As has been said, this comes up every now and then but I think it is worth repeating.[:)] Another great resource for older time period layouts at least for the northeast is: http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/nhtopos.htm . I have consulted the maps several times for the area I model (the Finger Lakes of New York).
Sorry, I’m too new to the Forum to know that this is an old topic, and Simon what the hell is wrong with having this topic in two different places?
Nothing really, other than you end up with a bunch of duplicate posts. If a thread is interesting it is nice to get all the comments in one place rather than having to hunt about for 2 versions of the same topic. The general forum is the best place to get more feedback.
Yeah, it’s come up before, but I was just using it to look at the hump yard here just a couple minutes ago, to see what has changed between then and when I visited an hour ago. Great program!
