You’re talking about John Allen’s famous Gorre & Daphetid. A legend in its own time, and an inspiration to a generation of modelers.

Several years ago Kalmbach put out a book on John Allen and his Gorre & Daphetid - Model Railroading with John Allen by Linn Westcott. You can sometimes find them at train shows or with used book dealers.
Enjoy

I Have a few Model Railroader dates to try. Look in the Dec. 1981 Model Railroader or the Jan. 1969 Model Railroader. The book is very hard to find although if you want it that bad you can search and a copy will come up. Jerry Braet put together a list of published John Allen articles but I don’t know where to find it.

What happened to the Part Three of the Old Varney Images on the web site? Is it me? or is it not working?
I liked the material very much as it reminded me of the John Allen days long gone. However while viewing the slideshow of the images in part one I found some modern advertising banners and sent them to the recycle bin.
All in all very good stuff.
Part three didn’t work for me either.
Enjoy

Model Railroading with John Allen, the story of the fabulous HO scale Gorre & Daphetid Railroad, by Linn H. Westcott, was published by Kalmbach Books in July 1981, with a second printing in January 1982. ISBN Number 0-89024-559-2, may still be available through Kalmbach.
My husbands father, Keith Crock, was a freind of John Allens, and a regular operator at John’s home. Mike has fond childhood memories of time at the layout. Besides trains, John also liked reptiles. He had a large snake in a HUGE glass tank. Mike noticed a shed-off skin behind the glass and asked if he could have it. John said 'Sure, If you go in and get it" Sooooo…John opened the door and Mike went in a got the skin, He kept it for many years in a glass jar. Eventually it disentegrated into dust.
Somewhere out here is a video that was released by one of the train video specialists, of the layout. If anyone can refer me to a copy,or perhaps loan one to me, I sure would appreciate it.

Jennifer;
The Video is from Sunday River Productions, 36 min long .
Jennifer,
Was just going to mention that. I know that there’s a sealed copy of the video at a LHS in my area. If you can’t locate one, let me know and I’ll give you their contact address.

Why are these products so expensive? $36 for the video and up to $121.95 for the book.
Cajon Kid;
The video is 36 MINUTES not $36.00. I got my vid for $15.00 thru e-bay last year. As far as I know it is still available from Sunday River. The book however, is another story. My first edition was $34.00 or so twenty years ago brand new. It is now out of print, and as such prices asked are at a premium.
Actually the reason Kalmbach did a second printing is, as soon as you opened the book, the pages started falling out. For those of us who purchased one Kalmbach replaced it. I had mine in its cardboard shipping container for a long time. $121 you say??? Most of the pictures in the book were ones already published in MR. I have a few 1/2 frame slides I took when I visited him in the late '60’s.

Another place to look is ebay. A few years back I was able to get the Modelrailroader(Jan '69??) featuring the G&D. Also try your library. I found the book in the library one time.
My $.02

For people wanting to learn more about the GD Line we have a nice little group over at Yahoo: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GandD/
Last summer while vacationing on Cape Cod, I found a July 1946 issue of MR at an old book store. The cover story was by John Allen entitled " How to Make Realistic Model Photos. This must have been his first of many articles. Fortunately I have many of them in the years that followed. Quoting Sam Posey from his new book “Playing With Trains”, when speaking of his son:
" A second -generation big layout,as far as I know has never been done, except in the sence that John Allen was a '‘father" to so many of us.’

$34.00? I have a first edition and the price on mine is $21.95.
Andre
I was at the Army Language School in Monterey for Czech in the early 60’s, and a regular operator with John Allen for over a year prior to my transfer to Ft. Sill for Artillery OCS.

Andre;
